Orthodontics

No matter what your age is, it's never too late to improve your smile. The specialists at Raha Dental Care can help you achieve that perfect smile. Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the dental specialty that includes the diagnosis, prevention, interception, and correction of malocclusion, as well as neuromuscular and skeletal abnormalities of the developing or mature orofacial structures. The Orthodontic Specialists at Raha Dental Care are specialized in correcting mis-aligned or crooked teeth as well as proclined and retroclined teeth or close spaces between teeth for you to achieve a perfect smile!

Those with crooked teeth tend to have a bad bite. Even when teeth look straight, the upper and lower teeth may not fit together properly. Malocclusion, Protruding, Crowded or irregularly spaced teeth and jaw problems can be inherited. Thumb sucking, losing teeth prematurely or accidents can also be causes for bad bites. Crooked teeth may lead to tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss. An uneven bite can interfere with chewing and speech and can cause abnormal wear to tooth enamel or cause problems for jaws. Bite check should be done after appearance of first permanent molars in children and orthodontic treatment must be done to avoid future complications. Orthodontic treatment with Braces and Aligners can fix the crooked teeth and your orthodontist will discuss which type of treatment you need.

Types of orthodontic treatment

There are different types of orthodontic treatment to correct a bad bite. Our bite combines many parts in our mouth. Teeth, jaws, gums and facial muscles work together to help us chew, speak and smile. To get the bite in line, a few different steps may be needed. Braces and aligners are used to do orthodontic corrections of teeth.

Surgical correction

Some patients with upper or lower jaw sticking out which causes their bite to be uneven would need surgery to improve the function & appearance of their bites.

Braces

Dental braces are devices used to align and straighten teeth and help position them with regard to a person's bite, while also aiming to improve dental health. Braces also fix gaps. They are often used to correct under bites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. They can be either cosmetic or structural and are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to help widen the palate or jaws and to otherwise assist in shaping the teeth and jaws.

Most people wear braces for one or 3 years depending on what conditions need correction. Then they wear retainers that hold the teeth in their new positions. Although a little discomfort is expected during treatment, nowadays more comfortable braces have come with new materials that apply a constant gentle force to move teeth and usually require fewer adjustments.

Braces- Do's and don'ts

Do’s:

  • Keep your teeth clean when wearing braces. Brushing and flossing helps remove plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. If plaque is not removed regularly it could lead to tooth decay or gum disease.
  • Replace your tooth brush every 3 months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Worn tooth brushes won’t clean properly.
  • Be regular in your orthodontic appointments. If you delay any adjustments, your treatment will take longer.
  • Keep visiting your regular dentist for cleanings and exams. Your dentist checks your teeth for loss of minerals in the enamel and decay. He also looks for gum disease and changes in oral tissues.

Don’ts:

  • Do not eat foods that could get stuck in your braces or bend the wires. These foods include nuts, corn on the cob, popcorn, hard candy, ice, and sticky foods like chewing gum, caramel, or other chewy candy. Ask your dentist about which foods to avoid.
  • Do not eat too many sugary foods. This can lead to tooth decay around the brackets that could permanently stain or damage your teeth.
  • Do not play sports and active games without wearing a mouth guard which can protect your mouth and jaws.

Aligners

Aligners are made of clear plastic or acrylic material and are worn over your teeth to straighten them. Each set of custom-made aligners is worn for a few weeks or a month & then a new set is used for the next stage of treatment. This way gradually the teeth get moved to a new position. Aligners are removable and need to be taken out before you eat, brush or floss. Please follow instructions from your dentist on how long to wear them each day.

Prosthodontics

A beautiful smile is important to your health, hygiene, confidence, and self-esteem. At Raha Dental care, we can help you have the most attractive, natural-looking smile possible through advanced Prosthodontic care. Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth.

The dental specialists at Raha Dental Care, concentrate on the aesthetic restoration and replacement of teeth to their proper form and function. As a comprehensive dental practice, we offer our patients a wide range of Prosthodontic treatments. Prosthodontic care focuses on complete oral rehabilitation and treatment of numerous dental conditions like:

  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ & TMD)
  • Traumatic injuries to the mouth’s structures
  • Congenital or birth anomalies to teeth
  • Snoring and sleep disorders
  • Oral cancer reconstruction and continuing care

Prosthodontic Treatment Options:

To restore your smile, we may recommend the following Prosthodontic treatments:

Bridges

A bridge may be used to replace missing teeth, help maintain the shape of the face and alleviate stress on the bite. It bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been. Gold, Alloys, Porcelain, or a combination of these materials is used to make Bridges which are bonded onto surrounding teeth for support.

Crowns

Crowns are used to improve your tooth’s shape or to strengthen a tooth when teeth are broken, worn, or have portions destroyed by tooth decay. It is like a “cap” cemented onto an existing tooth which fully covers the portion of the tooth above the gum line. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred.

Dental Implants

An implant is an artificial tooth made of metal and porcelain that looks just like natural tooth. It has two main parts - the titanium implant body (root) and the tooth-colored crown that is cemented on top of the implant. An implant is an excellent replacement to the natural tooth as they look similar and can be aesthetically pleasing.

Dentures

Dentures are removable natural-looking replacement teeth made as per specifications. Full dentures are given to patients when all of the natural teeth have been removed. Partial dentures are attached to a metal frame that is connected to natural teeth and are used to fill in where permanent teeth have been removed.

Fillings

Fillings are often used to repair a tooth that is affected by wear, decay, cracks, or fractures. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth is removed and replaced with a filling made up of different materials like Gold, Porcelain, Composite, Ceramic compound etc.

Occlusal Disease Treatment

Occlusal disease is caused by a misalignment between the teeth of the upper and lower dental arches, also called malocclusion. If left untreated, it may damage teeth, the supporting bones and gums and the jaw muscles. Prosthodontic treatment can alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by occlusal disease.

Veneers

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells made from tooth-colored materials like Porcelain, designed to cover the front side of your teeth. They are natural in appearance and good for patients who want to make adjustments to the look and feel of their smile.

Endodontics

Get relief from Dental pain! When there is inflammation or infection in the roots of a tooth it causes excruciating pain. Endodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the study and treatment of the dental pulp. Endodontists at Raha Dental Care are experts in performing the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease or injury in the tooth roots and surrounding soft tissue below.

Root canal treatment is an often straightforward procedure to relieve dental pain and save your teeth. Patients typically need a root canal when the Pulp gets infected & gets inflamed as a Pulp Abscess is formed. When the damage goes beyond what can be treated with a filling, we can perform a root canal to preserve the tooth and retain its original integrity. During root canal treatment, an Endodontist carefully removes the pulp inside the tooth, cleans, disinfects and shapes the root canals, and replaces it with strengthened filler.

Problems that may require a Root Canal:

  • Inflamed/infected tooth pulp
  • Swelling or tenderness near the infected tooth
  • Severe sensitivity to hot and cold elements
  • Tooth decay
  • Chipped or broken tooth
  • Blow to the tooth
  • Repeat dental procedures on a single tooth

These problems can lead to severe tooth decay reaching the root of the tooth, causing extensive damage to the tooth structure if left untreated. At Raha Dental care, we offer our patients the latest therapy options in root canal treatment.

Implantology

Get back that perfect smile! Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge and is used to replace missing tooth as well as also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures as they provide excellent support and stability for them. Dental implants are intimately connected with the gum tissues and underlying bone in the mouth. Hence Periodontists and Implantologists at Raha Dental Care take careful steps in ensuring that implants are fixed without causing any damages to adjoining areas.

Types of Dental Implants

Endosteal (in the bone): This is the most commonly used type of implant. Its various types include screws, and cylinders or blades surgically placed into the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth. This type of implant is generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures.

Subperiosteal (on the bone): These are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework's posts protruding through the gum to hold the prosthesis. These types of implants are used for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have minimal bone height.

Who can go for dental implants?

Good general and oral health is needed to get a dental implant. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease

What is a Dental Implant procedure like?

This procedure is a team effort that includes the patient, the dentist and the Periodontist. The Periodontist and dentist will consult with the patient to determine where and how the implant should be placed. Depending on specific condition and the type of implant chosen, the periodontist will create a treatment plan tailored to meet your needs.

Replacing a single tooth - If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it.
Replacing several teeth - If you are missing several teeth, an implant – supported bridges can replace them.
Replacing all of your teeth - If you are missing all of your teeth, an implant supported by full bridge or full denture can replace them.

Sinus Augmentation

A key to implant success is the quantity and quality of the bone where the implant is to be placed. The upper back jaw has traditionally been one of the most difficult areas to successfully place dental implants due to insufficient bone quantity and quality and the close proximity to the sinus. Sinus augmentation can help correct this problem by raising the sinus floor and developing bone for the placement of dental implants.

Ridge Modification

Deformities in the upper or lower jaw can leave you with inadequate bone in which to place dental implants. To correct the problem, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose the bone defect which is then filled with bone graft material or a bone substitute to help regenerate lost bone. Finally, the incision is closed and several months of healing will be required. Depending on the case and type of implant and procedure, a dental implant may be placed during the ridge modification procedure or when healing is complete; much depends on the precise condition of the bone. Ridge modification improves the cosmetic appearance, functionality of the mouth, and the chance of enjoying dental implants for many years.

Periodontics

Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes. Perodontists also help in maintenance of the health, function and aesthetics of these structures and tissues.

Types of Gum disease

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease which causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. It is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene & is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.

Diabetes, smoking, aging, genetic predisposition, systemic diseases and conditions, stress, inadequate nutrition, puberty, hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, substance abuse, HIV infection, and certain medication also cause gingivitis. Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis and can eventually lead to tooth loss and other health problems.

Periodontitis

It is a leading cause of tooth loss and may be associated with other chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.

Aggressive periodontitis occurs in patients who are otherwise clinically healthy. Common features include rapid attachment loss and bone destruction and familial aggregation.

Chronic periodontitis the most frequently occurring form of periodontitis, results in inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth, progressive attachment and bone loss. Progression of attachment loss usually occurs slowly, but periods of rapid progression can occur. Heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes are associated with this form of periodontitis.

Necrotising Periodontitis is an infection characterized by necrosis of gingival tissues, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone commonly seen in persons with HIV, malnutrition & immunosuppression.

Non-surgical Gum Disease Treatment

Deep Cleaning – When plaque is not removed daily it hardens into tartar that can only be removed by a dentist. Professional deep cleaning, also known as tooth scaling and root planning can effectively treat a mild case of receding gums removing plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth, as well as their roots below the gum line.

Surgical Gum Disease Treatment - More advanced cases of gum disease are treated by surgery performed by a Periodontist.

Depigmentation - Gingival depigmentation is a periodontal plastic surgical procedure whereby the gingival hyperpigmentation is removed by scraping, free gingival auto grafting, cryosurgery, electro surgery, and various types of lasers.

Pocket Depth Reduction – Receding gums and periodontitis can cause your gums to pull away from your teeth and create gaps or pockets that are breeding grounds for harmful bacteria. During this procedure, your dentist or periodontist will fold back the receded gum tissue and remove the bacteria from the pockets after which the pockets are eliminated or reduced when the surgeon repositions the gum tissue snugly over the exposed tooth roots.

Regeneration – In severe cases of receding gums and periodontitis, regeneration will spark the growth of lost bone and tissue. First, the gum tissue is folded back to remove bacteria in the pocket. Next, a regenerative material is applied to stimulate the body to regenerate new bone and tissue. The gum tissue is repositioned snugly over the tooth roots.

Soft Tissue Grafts – Gum tissue from the palate (roof of the mouth) or from another donor source is used to cover one or more exposed roots and this restores the gum line and helps reverse serious gum disease.

Prevention of Gum Disease- Tips

  • Clean and floss your teeth daily to thoroughly remove particles and bacteria trapped between your teeth.
  • Don’t use a hard-bristled brush. Aggressive brushing with a hard or traditional toothbrush, especially brushing horizontally instead of vertically, can damage the protective enamel on your teeth.
  • Switch to safer products such as innovative, new dental hygiene tools like safer toothbrushes.
  • Schedule professional teeth cleanings twice a year.
